WEAVING

Weaving is a way of putting lots of fibers together to form a big piece without
using glue or staples or tape.  The loom holds the warp threads still so you
can weave into them. Weaving is another way to connect materials together.

Weaving with materials other than yarn, such as:

  • Raffia
  • Ribbon
  • Natural materials
  • Beads
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Wires

Some kinds of looms:

  • Paper
  • Potholder
  • Cardboard
  • Boxes
  • Drinking straws
  • Table
  • Tapestry
  • Stick
  • Circular

Stitching and Sewing

Sewing puts two pieces together, stitching is decorating—drawing with a needle.  Because sewing requires more complex skills, it is best to begin with simple stitching. Beginners can stitch on a piece of Styrofoam, burlap or other loosely woven cloth. Basic instruction for independent work includes:

  • Threading a needle
  • Tying knots
  • Pulling out mistakes
  • Controlling the length of the stitches

Beginners can sew a burlap pocket, which can lead to soft sculpture and pillows.
