Starting with watercolor and tempera blocks enables teachers to address set-up and clean-up right away with young students. Teachers create a system with menus, allowing students to set-up and clean-up their own painting area without assistance. When routines are in place, liquid tempera and liquid watercolor can be added, with acrylics for older students.
Possible demonstrations for painting:
- Setting up materials and tools and putting them away
- How to use palettes to mix colors
- How to work around and with mistakes
- Brushes and brushstrokes
- Content for paintings: how to choose subject matter (landscape, still life, portrait, animal, non objective)
